14th February Build-a-Nestbox
Many birds will get off to a flying start on the house hunting front early this year and nest boxes are a great substitutes for holes in old trees. They’re a real favourite with many birds including blue tits, robins, house sparrows and starlings.
If you got a nest box for Christmas, don’t leave it lying around, get it put up now while the birds are still browsing. It is important to site them correctly though; a nest box in the wrong place could mean birds suffer.
If you don't have a bird box and are interested in learning about garden birds; how to feed them and how to build your very own bird box, the Ring of Gullion, Biodiversity and Action for Biodiversity Officers with Newry and Mourne Council are offering you the chance to come along on February the 14th in Mullaghbawn's TiChulainn centre.

10th March Ring of Gullion Star Party
The people who built the highest surviving passage tomb in Ireland at the top of Slieve Gullion must have been astronomers, they knew about the winter solstice, where the sun would set, and they built a passage tomb taking advantage of the setting sun on the shortest day of the year to illuminate the chamber inside. This took precise astronomical observations and must have been extremely important to the local people at the time.
So if you want to walk in the footsteps of your ancestors, albeit with telescopes and binoculars, join us to look up into the sky to learn a little bit more about what’s out there. We should have fantastic views of the moon with it rising just before 10pm.
