The people who built the highest surviving passage tomb in Ireland at the top of Slieve Gullion must have been astronomers, they knew about the Winter Solstice, where the sun would set, and they built a passage tomb taking advantage of the setting sun on the shortest day of the year to illuminate the chamber inside. This took precise astronomical observations and must have been extremely important to local people at the time. So, if you want to walk in the footsteps of your ancestors, albeit with telescopes and binoculars, join us to look up into the sky to learn a little bit more about what's out there.

20th-22 December - Winter Guided Hike to Summit of Slieve Gullion

Set on the summit of Slieve Gullion is the highest surviving passage tomb in Ireland. It is known locally as 'the Calliagh Berra's House'. And every year in the Winter Solstice the setting sun illuminates the passage inside. The stone monument dates to between 4000 B.C. and 2500 B.C... making it up to 6000 years old. That could be 3000 years older than the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt and nearly 4000 years older than England's Stonhenge! Or as old as them anyway...The tomb is aligned to the setting sun at the Winter Solstice. It is breathtaking when the sun finally hits the back of the chamber and it is amazing just how bright it gets. We will be taking three guided walks on the 20th, 21st and 22nd of December. You can choose which day you would like to go on the bookings page. Please wear appropriate clothing, and it is dusk when we descend so experienced people only.
