Newry and Mourne District Council is delighted to host 'Tapestry of Colours'. This feature length documentary explores the perception of identity in Northern Ireland as it becomes progressively diverse. The film includes some thought provoking accounts by local musicians Fergal O’Brien and William Dundun, an Irish traveller from Dundalk. Zhenia Mahdi-Nau the artist, photographer and filmmaker based in Belfast was born in Iran but having lived in Northern Ireland for over 20 years, she has drawn on all of her creative and artistic skills to direct and produce an important, memorable and ground breaking piece of work which has been receiving increasing praise and interest from the public, local government, public organisation and the media.

Official switch on of the 'Blue Lights' on the 18 Arches Viaduct. The Lord Mayor of Newry John McArdle will attend the big 'Switch On'. Northern Ireland's very own Dolly Parton and Kate Perry will be there to support us. From 8pm the Millvale Arms (short walk from the Viaduct)will be hosting a night of song, music, dance and criac with the two biggest Tribute Acts in Northern Ireland. There will be a break at 9.15pm for those who wish to join the big 'Switch On' under the highest Arch, a shuttle car will be available to the Arch, the Show will commence again at 10pm. Hot food and tea will be available from a mobile 'Hot Food Van' in the Millvale Arms grounds, a restroom will also be available. Advisable for anyone at this event to take a 'torch'.

There is no doubt that one of the highlights of the year in the Northern Ireland classic car scene is the Kilbroney Vintage Show, which takes place in Kilbroney Park, Rostrevor. It can’t be disputed that this is the most beautiful venue in Ireland for a car show, and is well worth a visit for any classic enthusiast. The event is run by the Newry & Mourne Council with the help of the local Lions Club. It is a great family day out with a festive atmosphere not to be missed.

A new department for running events on the island of Ireland. This 300km, 6 day stage race will see participants running 50km each day from the Mournes to South Kerry. Based in the scenic village of Rostrevor, preparations for the 27th festival are well in hand. There will be free outdoor ceilis, an open air stage, art exhibitions, children's entertainment and even a literary pub crawl, with the emphasis on 'literary' rather than 'crawling'! All musical tastes are catered for (folk, blues, country, classical), with lunchtime, early evening and night time folk clubs. The Fiddler's Green Festival has come a long way in the last 27 years. It began as a one day event, progressed to a weekend one and now extends to eight days and seven nights of music, culture and craic. With up to 200 events the festival caters for music fanatics, families who wish to enjoy a safe, child focused festival, and those who come just to soak up the scenery, the friendliness and the free outdoor music.

Women's Mini Marathon is a 10k event for women designed by women.“Leitrim Lodge” is the starting point to the Mini Marathon. In addition to registering online all participants MUST register on the morning of the event in Kilbroney Park.Once registered, all participants will board a series of buses that will transport everyone to the start point of the event at Leitrim Lodge. The last bus will depart for the start location at 11:15am.

Migration in Down History will consider the impact of human migration into, within and out of the county over the course of the past four centuries. Particular attention will be paid to the idea of a Down Diaspora and evidence presented from some of the many emigrant letters which connected those overseas with those family members at home. Dr. Paddy Fitzgerald joined the curatorial department of the Ulster-American Folk Park in Northern Ireland in 1990. In 1994 he obtained his doctorate from the Queen’s University of Belfast. He acted as curator of a major permanent exhibition entitled ‘Emigrants’, which opened in 1994. He has published many articles on various aspects of Irish migration and co-authored with Dr. Brian Lambkin a book entitled Migration in Irish History 1607-2007 published with Palgrave in 2008. Since 1996 he has been teaching a Queen’s University Belfast Masters course in Irish Migration Studies within the Mellon Centre for Migration Studies.

Route: Leaves Crossmaglen GFC for Newtownhamilton via the Castleblaney Road, taking in the steep Molly Ash hill climb, a tea break at Mount Norris. Second half of the cycle is through Camlough, Meigh, Forkhill, Mullaghbawn before heading back to Crossmaglen GFC. Soup and sandwiches will be served at the finish. A Cycling helmet must be worn and ‘Cycle Ireland License’ available on the day, for £1.

TRAILTREKKER is an exceptional team challenge that takes you on varied terrain through the Mourne mountains and the Cooley Peninsula. It’s an amazing experience that combines endurance, team work and determination. On 10-11 September, teams of four will take on a 50km or 100km route, starting in Donard Park, Co. An adventure duathlon taking place from the scencic setting of Silent Valley in the heart of the Mourne Mountains. Participants can choose one or two courses, elite or sport, which will see them running along tracks and trails in the Silent Valley, cycling an anti-clockwise loop on the roads around the Mournes before setting off on a final road run through some of the most stunning scenery in the Mournes, Elite athletes will also have an ascent and descent of Slieve Donard during the cycle section.

Her talk, Gone for Good, looks at the various types of migration to the North Americas that took place during the 19th century, such as step migration, chain migration, push and pull factors, and assisted migration. The various sources on migration currently held in the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland will also be touched on. The Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) is the official archive for Northern Ireland. It aims to identify and preserve records of historical, social and cultural importance and make them available for the information, education and enjoyment of the public.
